Golden Key National Leadership Honor Society is legitimate. Rules may have changed for membership and my memory may be hazy but it is invitation only. Some of the criteria for membership were a high GPA, be a campus and community leader, and I think there was something else.
Generally, one had to make the National Honor Society that is based on GPA. I was on the Dean's List every semester and made the National Honor Society. The community civic and school activities were not limited to only one area. For example, I was on the student senate, student affairs committee, VP of the Cycling Club, six other academic societies (physics, biology, social sciences, etc.), Chairman of the student programming organization, and much more.
The selection committee meets in secret. Prospective members are nominated by current members. This brings the possibility of a clique but it didn't occur at least on our campus. There were a wide variety of political affiliations, ages, etc.
Those selected are notified by a personal visit by one of the Golden Key members and usually the person who nominated them during the student's class. It is a big deal and I don't know of any professors who ever objected to this five minute interruption. I believe the professors were notified in advance.
The nominees are tagged and awarded membership at an awards dinner. There are usually a couple of business awardees. For example, at my ceremony, one of the three was a CEO of a Fortune 200 company.
The member gets to wear an honor cord at graduation. This is one of two or three allowed at least at our university.
Absolutely join Golden Key. It is fantastic on a resume and a great memory and experience. Golden Key members are looked upon favorably by professional school recruiters as this immediately identifies this person excelled academically and balanced a busy non-academic life. Most business recruiters will know of this society.
