"The Conversation" by Coppola, if you've ever seen it, captures this beautifully, although with the added irony of the target being a surveillance expert.
The worst case I've endured was when an installer guy dropped his pager in the crawlspace under our house (unbeknownst to anybody). It took about two weeks for the battery to drop to the point at which it began its intermittant Low-Battery chirp, which meant it took several maddening days for us to figure out what it was. The hardest thing is determining where the sound is coming from, as a muffled chirp isn't particularly directional.
The guy was happy to have his pager back, but not happy about crawling 30 feet under our house to get it.
