Turn table update

So I am going to change the grounding situation on my TT tomorrow. In the mean time I have a question for all you audiophiles to chew over:
The hum is louder when I switch to the phono input on the receiver, but the TT is not turned on. Is this still a grounding issue, or an issue with the receiver?
I checked out the cartridge, and it's a Stanton 680EE. I know it was replaced sometime in the mid-80's, but the TT hasn't seen a whole lotta use since then. Should I plan on replacing the cartridge?
