Not sure if Saab invented these, or was just the first to start using them, but they've been standard on the driver side of Saabs in Sweden as far back as the 9000, and on the passenger side in the US back to the 9-5 intro (our silly laws still require the Mfr. to install a flat mirror on the driver side...).
Ever since I bought one for my Classic 900, I won't be without them. I found one on fleabay for my 9-5, I had a chap from the UK ship me a pair for the RIGHT side a few years back, and I even had one on my 99 with manual mirrors.
That's different about these is the inner 2/3 (for both sides) is a mild "convex: shape, like what a "regular" car comes with on the right side. The outer 1/3, however, is also shaped more severely cylindrically, effectively "squeezing" what would take another 2/3 of a missir to see into that last 1/3.
If you recall old spaghetti westerns, where the end credits often were shown on TV with everything looking really tall and skinny, that's exactly what's going on here (in the movies, that's called "anamorphic", squeezing a wide image onto a narrow film frame).
I can drive with my head squarely in the middle of the headrest, and see quite a lot around me.
Still, I check the sides anyway.
