Hey folks,

I am on the market for a 1999-2000 Saab 9-3 or 9-5 with the 4 cylinder turbo and manual trans.

I have never owned a Saab and am coming from driving domestic SUVs. I have always been interested in european sedans and wagons and with the recent gas prices I am ready to get into something a bit more fuel efficient. Although I am not looking for a super gas milage car because I am 6'2" and need some room to stretch out, I am looking for comfort and some room in the drivers seat.

I have been doing my research and it seems like an awful lot of people dislike Saab for being high maintenance... I am trying to get an objective view here because the stories I read online are a bit outlandish. (parts just falling off, windows falling down in the door, etc) I realize the european cars generally won't take the abuse of the "drive it until it dies" mentality of most americans. But I don't expect them to, I like maintaining my cars and keeping them in good shape.

Anyway, (1) I want to get some opinions of maintenance and what that looks like for most of you. As well as your thoughts on overall reliability.

(2) Given the brief description of what I am looking for in a car, do you think I am on the right track with the Saab?
(Again, reasonable gas mileage, room for a tall people, reliability when maintained, comfortable interior, european handling and driving characteristics)

(3) Given the range of years and engine/transmission options that I am looking at, are there any known problems or quirks I should be on the look out for in my search?

Thanks folks, I really appreciate your help!!
