My wife has an '06 9-3 SportCombi 2.0T 5-speed. In short, it's an awesome car and I'm glad we got it. It replaced a 2001 9-3 base 3-door 5-speed as we had our son on the way. Complaints on the NG9-3: seats aren't as good as C900/OG9-3, too darn many buttons for ACC / audio system, and window switches are on the doors. Otherwise, I LOVE the car for feel, braking, handling, shifting, etc. It's a ball to drive. I know the 2007+ dash got simplified, but the Jan 2007 deal on a 2006 9-3SC was simply too good to pass up. I'll deal with screwy buttons for the deal I got!
As much as "classic" saab owners may want to bash the new ones, I have to say the NG9-3 is great. Now, nothing will touch my 90 SPG as the most fun car I've had. Including my 9-3 Viggen ragtop. The SPG had the most visceral connection with the road and driving I have had with a car. Viggen is maybe #2. But every time I get into my wife's 9-3SC I love it. It's light, handles great, and is simply FUN to drive.
My current daily driver is a '04 9-5 Aero 5-speed in merlot. It's a GREAT car with all the options and an aftermarket NAV/DVD/MP3/touchscreen audio setup. I've had the car 2 months & 4k+ miles in a new-to-me regional sales job. I can't dial the seat in on the 9-5 Aero. I actually jacked up my back, and I think the amount of driving I do is involved. As fun as the car is, I'm to the point I wish I could have a TurboX 9-3SC instead. Problem is the used car deal vs. a new special edition. I'll work on seat adjustment 'til someone will part with a manual gearbox 9-3SC TurboX in a few years.
I still love to jump in the 9-3SC in the evening or on the weekend. It's a lighter, more fun car to drive than my 9-5 Aero.
I learned from the SPG, it's not about what car is fastest, it's about what car FEELS the best. Ever drive a bone stock old Miata? Maybe not FAST, but is sure is FUN. In real world driving, do the specs in C+D or R+T matter? Maybe if you're a track racer or have lots of running room. But in California traffic, all I have to go on is seat of the pants feel. And the NG 9-3 is GREAT.
