Turbos are pretty easy to check - they either spin or they don't. If you can spin the impeller easily with your fingers and there is minimal play, the turbo is probably OK.
I'd think about it less as a turbocharged engine and more as the diesel it is. All the turbo does is create an even bigger internal pressure. But black smoke implies incomplete combustion. I'm no diesel expert, but I'd make sure your fuel pressure is correct. Either too high or too low, and you won't get the right air-fuel mixture. And air-fuel mixture is critical to getting the stuff to explode properly when the piston comes up - it's not like there is a spark plug to light it off at just the right time. Both too rich and too lean can cause improper combustion, which would lead to black smoke and no power.
Of course, I don't even want to think about the control loops on a modern diesel, so you may need some professional help. Here in the US we know of diesel Saabs only through rumor and folklore, although I've seen quite a few when I've ventured out of the Colonies.
