road trip recommendations on route...

i'll be heading down to the eastern shore of maryland from boston this weekend to visit my parents. i've made the trip many times over the past 10 years or so, but this time i will be taking my 6 week old daughter. our most recent trips have been thanksgiving when it is always a pain, so i am hoping traffic will be a little off this week. we are planning to make the trip on friday figuring everyone will be settled in to their bbq's and backyard fun, thus reducing some of the traffic on the highway.
my route normally goes south on 95 to NYC, cross the GW bridge, south on the NJ turnpike, cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and then on to the eastern shore. normal tight spots are hit or miss down through CT on 95, NYC, and then the NJ TP.
my question, for those of you living in the areas i normally run through, is it fine keeping this route for this weekend? or should i look to make adjustments. only other route i have tried before is west on 90 out of boston, south through hartford, CT and then link up with the NJ TP south of NYC.
will the macy's fireworks in NYC impact crossing the GW bridge? do you still think traffic will stink on friday anyway? my hope is that folks took the week off, or at least a long weekend, and there won't be as much volume on friday.
any thoughts/recommendations would be appreciated.
