I believe the ECU gets timing info from the plugs. The explosion within the combustion chamber induces an electro-magnetic spike (similar to the doomsday weapon but a much smaller scale) back into the ignition system. The ECU reads the timing of the spike to adjust the engine timing.
Non-specified plugs may have an internal construction that interferes with the collection of this data. I ran Champions in my 4-cylinder once with no problem, but since learning how the ECU collects this timing information it has been NGK's only.
