GM in Canada ends its leasing today. Chrysler already at high interest rates (12%) to discourage leasing. Others are putting very low residuals on their trucks, SUVs - so everthing still looks good up front, until you see all the numbers. I was looking at an SUV for work and leased a 97X at the last minute. It came down to who gave the best overall number and what product was availble. The GM residual was much higher than competitors.
In Canada, it is not only the price of gas but I think also the artficially high MSRP vs US pricing. Canadian prices are higher than US resulting in higher residuals and that can't compete at the auctions - especially with the number of people importing lower priced US vehicles.
I think GM will have a hard time moving their Saabs here with no leasing.
