As others have said, NAD's design philosophy is not in bells and whistles, but in focusing on good design that emphasizes sound quality. They also do not over-inflate their specs as some other brands do. The saying is that an NAD watt is superior to any other amp's watt (i.e., a 100 watt per channel NAD amp will outperform a 100 watt amp from from another brand).

As for quality issues, there were some a couple of years back, but as a result, NAD has changed suppliers on parts and started manufacturing at a new factory and those issues seem to have been addressed. I recently replaced a 20+ year old NAD integrated amp and NAD tuner with the new T775 A/V receiver and am very happy with it. The old amp and tuner worked flawlessly for 20+ years except for one minor repair a couple of years ago on left output channel of the amp. The T775 is about twice your price range, but I went with it to get HDMI support. (It lists over $2000, but I was able to talk the dealer down a bit on the price.) The nice thing about their new receivers is that they have made them modular with replaceable cards (like in a PC) so certain components can be upgraded or replaced, if necessary for a repair...another great design point, in my opinion. I have heard that some of their less expensive receivers may also be picking up HDMI support later this fall. If HDMI is not important for you, then take a look at some of their existing lower cost receivers. I think you will like what you hear.

If you end up buying new, definitely go with an authorized dealer. If buying used, I would suggest Audiogon.com...sort of an eBay for audiophiles.
