Looking to adopt a dog....what do you say?

Me and my wife are looking to adopt a dog, we are in the New Haven CT area. I would (idealy) want a Lab type of dog/mix. I love them and have had good experiences with them in the past. My wife want a "cute" one, doesn't matter the breed, it must be cute (in her eyes).
I have found a number of places around, but still haven't found the cute one...One thing that aggravates me though is that there is tipically an "adoption fee/Donation" associated with the dog. I don't have a problem with the "Donation", just a problem with the amount. Some places charge you over $300-$450 for a dog that gets the same vaccines and drugs than the dog at the local shelter gets for a minimal donation of $50. So, is it a donation?
Another thing that bothers me is when you find postings on the web form individuals that are offering up for "adoption" a pet, but also want money. I would gladly donate the money to a shelter, but when you are "donating" money to an individual you are just purchasing a dog (even if they are just covering the cost of the dog's stuff).
So, anyone with a dog in the New Haven (I'd be willing to do some driving for the perfect dog) area that's up for adoption? If it's cute enough I would take it off your hadns at no cost to me....
