oh I'm definetly not a pro on this, either. However, most automatics (other than the c900 borge warner!) have a lockup in high gear, new ones may have more than high gear lockup don't know. So if on the freeway I, in my 94 5s 9000 push the gas it it doesn't down shift unless I do it, and usually I don't need to downshift. in an automatic it will decide if it's necessary to downshift and do so, and if out of high gear then we are working on the torque converter and the engine speed and the car speed are decoupled (think climbing in the hills or mountains). As to the brake effect, I push the clutch in and coast and have done that for years so not sure I understand if you mean the automatic coasts when you let off the gas? I'm sure that there will be two things going forward, the automatics in the more expensive cars will be smarter and smarter and to a much better job. I rememeber seeing a Mercedes commercial last year that extolled the vertures of the new 7 speed automatic and it got an EPA *estimated* 27 MPG. I get much better than that on my 1994 Aero 5 speed... but anyway I believe that the less expensive cars will have more simple automatics and *perhaps* the stick shift will do better in those cars than the automatics available in those cars. I have both and as a buddy said "different horses for different courses..." and use them as appropriate.
