Now is not the time to do anything different. Any action taken because of what the market does from one day to the next has very good odds of failing to meet your goal. Today, with no advance notice, the market (DJIA) went up 410 points. While this 3.86% increase seems good, many solid and sound companies did better. An example is PNC, a large regional bank; it went up 9.78% and hit it's high for the last 52 weeks.
The DJIA is an average made up of 30 very large companies. It is not the holy grail of information regarding what is going on.
Stick to your long term investment strategy. Long term stock appreciation averages are in the 14% range. Small versus medium versus large cap equities are slightly above or below this metric and generally have greater risk and volatility that accompanies those with greater long-term performance.
Stock selection should be based upon a rational analysis that considers many measurements and performance criteria, and your personal goals. A decision to sell should be because your goals have changed or your stock's performance has not or cannot meet the criteria you’ve established.
A decision to sell should be the execution of a though-out exit strategy you established when you bought the stock. A 500 point drop in the DJIA is a lousy reason to sell a perfectly good stock.
