I was a member of an ownership-based flying club for 12 years and served as a trustee twice. One of the benefits I had that no one else here mentioned is that each of us was a named insured on the aircraft insurance, forgoing the need for any type of renters insurance (because we weren't renting).
There were also no daily minimums, so if I went out of town with a plane for several days I would not have to pay for two hours a day even if I didn't fly, which is how many rental organizations do it.
I had a true voice, both as a trustee and as a rank-and-file member on issues such as aircraft maintenance, avionics upgrades, etc. We found beyond a shadow of a doubt that if we did a 50 hour and a 100 hour inspection and treated each one like it was an annual, we saved money in the long run on aircraft maintenance. Renting by the hour doesn't afford these type of opportunities to participate in the decision making process and reaping the rewards.
Since everyone owns a share of the corporation and the assets, people tend to take much better care of the aircraft, in my experience. Were it not for the fact that my club started to die a slow death to to one or two personalities who killed it, I'd still be there. Right now I rent and it stinks.
