The rules change a lot. I am Gold level on US Air and it does nothing for me in terms of baggage except avoiding extra bag fees and getting me marginally better bag handling on international trips and tight connections. Ditto for Platinum and Chairman's at US.
Oversize & overweight stuff is a problem. I frequently fly with a Pelican case of video gear that weighs in at 67 pounds --well over the 50 pounds per bag limit. But if I move some stuff to another bag and check that, there is no fee, despite the fact that the plane still carries the same weight. It is so much BS. So I load up the Pelican and another bag and all is well, even though the Pelican is actually oversize.
Skis and golf clubs used to be OK, and sometimes they still are. Call whatever airline you fly on to find out, or have your stuff shipped by one of the sports gear shipping companies. If I ski out west this winter I'm figuring on using one of those firms to ship my skis & boots. IMHO, they probably take a bit better care of your stuff, too. I don't want to arrive at the Alta or A-Basin and find my new sticks have been trashed.
Airlines all suck. It's just a question of how much.
