I don't know the trucks well enough to point to any known issues. Toyotas are pretty well sorted vehicles, without a lot in the way of "Weak spots."

The Mazda trucks are Fords (or is it that the Fords are Mazdas?) and Are pretty nice trucks, but not up to the build quality of the Toyotas. A friend has a Nissan Frontier, and I'd never buy one because it is so uncomfortable... Personally, I think that my brother's Silverado is much more comfortable than his Tacoma was, but the Tacomas are not bad at all. Certainly, this has a lot to do with how tall you are, and what seating position you like.

I understand the desire to stay away from the really big trucks. A co-worker put 250K on his '90 Silverado without much more than a radiator. The Chevy V8s have actually proven to be very reliable. (I don't have any experience with Ford/Dodge to comment.) That being said, you can't go wrong with the engine in a Tacoma.
