andym and Denise,
The husband of one of my co-workers owns/operates a small fuel company. Small as in three independent stations and contracts with some constructions firms for equipment fueling.
Anyway, they sell fuel at a loss from time to time. Certainly they can't do this all the time, but in order for their station to remain legit, they need to be pretty close to the local norms. There are 4 gas stations in my town, and a dozen in the neighboring town. This guys stations are always within pennies of the cheapest in the area. Then again, all the stations are "low volume" compared to more urban/suburban areas.
All that to say that selling at a loss is sometimes necessary, and every gas station owner I know (one of them) does it from time to time.
I also find it interesting that prices seem to go up based on oil futures, but come down at a more leisurely rate. That's no conspiracy-theory... just business.
Anyway, we're down to $3.499-3.699 at the closest station to my house. That's down from $4.799-$4.999 not so long ago.
Cheers,
~Peter
