This is so true. The redundancy is ridiculous, costly, and utterly useless. Two brands that come to mind are Pontiac and Buick. Those two brands are a complete waste of money. While each of them may have a product or two that is worthwhile (G8 for example), there is no reason why they couldn't be wrapped into the Chevy brand (or whatever they end up using).
I look at Toyota as a good example of minimizing brands but still providing a varied range of products. Looking at Lexus, they have appeal to the old-timers (read: Buick buyer) with the ES and the LS, but they also appeal to the younger, performance oriented buyer (read: Pontiac buyer) with the IS. Why is it that GM thinks you need to create an entirely different brand in order to attract a buyer?
The time, money, and resources used to create two or three (or more) different cars could be used to create one truly outstanding car. To me, there is no reason to have anything more than:
- Chevy: bread-and butter cars and trucks,
- Cadillac: upscale both in performance and luxury,
- Saab: global brand that appeals to the "European" buyer
GMC, Pontiac, Saturn, Buick are redundant and could be absorbed into the other three brands. It's time for GM to get lean and mean.
