IMHO it might depend on type of use. If his driving is typically short distance perhaps a gas engine is better for the long term. Long distances, than a diesel might be better...this is just based on engine wear as I think short hops in a diesel wear on the engine long term. My 73 Ford F-250 never did much better than 10 MPG....really a gas hog. My Chevy Duramax, a turbo diesel 3/4 ton with 6-speed averages around 18 mpg (I doubt this is in any way a fair comparison...so just information). The Chev is an extended cab heavy duty 4wd flatbed set up for towing a 4 horse trailer through rough country....I might get a bit better milage with highway tires (as opposed to the more aggressive tread we currently use). The main difference between the gas and diesel is the huge torque generated by a 6L diesel engine...it is great for what I need.
