Hello Saabnetters:
I've been lurking around the site for a while and found the Saabnet site and bulletin boards to be very informative. I wasn't a Saab owner until yesterday when I purchased a 1990 900S 2-door. I was looking for a winter project and believe I've may have found one that will keep me busy for a couple of winters at least.
I recently got back into maintaining my vehicles after a bad experience with a neighborhood shop. I hadn't wrenched in a few years and found it a good way for me to relax. I spent last winter going through my wife's 1996 Toyota - she liked that because we saved a minimum of $2000 had we continued with the local shop. While it was rewarding to work on, it isn't a car I particularly enjoy, so I became interested in getting something more interesting.
I researched several makes of cars before settling on a Saab. I'm attracted to the off beat and looked into Citroen restoration. Citroens are plenty off beat, but also potentially brutal in terms of parts cost and availability - in the USA at least. The Saab C900 offers almost as much in terms of offbeat and is seems manageable for a rookie restorer. Actually, I'm not a complete rookie as I've done a couple of motorcycle restorations. Those experiences taught me a lot about how things can get more involved, and expensive, than you might think. I also learned a bit about how important having some patience can be. At the very least, I don't have any delusions about restoring a vehicle and turning a profit.
My C900 is a runner with a pretty solid motor, which is what I wanted. Plenty of cleanup, tear down, refinish, refurbish, and ordinary tuneup items needed. There are a couple of electrical issues that I'll need to tend to as well. I'm looking forward to beefing up my skills on the electronics end and opportunity is abundant.
Sorry for the long post. I'm obviously excited about the new vehicle and needed to run off at the mouth/keyboard about it. Try as she may - my wife can only listen to my automotive babbling for so long.
Finally, my questions. I'm interested in becoming a Saabnet member but am concerned about my membership being processed. I ran across a posting that said the site Administrator is in the hospital and that new Classifieds listings were not being processed. If the same is true for membership, I'd just as soon wait until everything is up and running. Is this a legitimate concern or will my membership be processed?
I'd also like to ask the members if they feel joining Saabnet as a member has been worth the cost?
Thanks all, I'll post an update once I've had a chance to get the 900S in the garage and give it a thorough look see.
