I've got a kubota gl6500s, 6500 watt diesel generator. It was originally bought to run a lot of computers and network gear, but we had to upgrade to a 30kw for that when the company grew. So now, it's at my house.

It runs about 12 hours on 4 gallons of diesel, powering the whole house with normal electrical loads. I have a gas stove and dryer, so I have no huge electrical loads. Well pump is 220v, and that's probably the biggest load. I disconnect from utility power, and plug a BFC coming from a double-breaker into the generator. Sometime when the deal is right, I'll get a big transfer switch and have an electrician put it in.

I keep the tank full of diesel+stabil and run it every couple of months to keep it charged up and ready. I also keep about 6-8 gallons of diesel in plastic cans. Beyond that, I'd have to bleed some #2 heating oil from the furnace burner, or drive to town and get more fuel.

I keep it under my porch which provides some protection from the weather. We live on a long rural road with lots of overgrown poorly trimmed trees growing in little soil. Lots of trees and branches come down in windy/wet storms, and if we lose power, it's usually for 12 hours to as many as a few days.

We have gasoline generators at work that work well too. The Honda EU2000 is simply the finest and most efficient small generator available and I can't recommend it well enough if 120v is all you need. We also have a couple normal Honda powered gasoline generators that work well, provided they get some regular maintenance. We have a Centurion/Generac propane generator that I consider junk. We also have indoors at the datacenter, a 30kw 3-phase Cummins-Onan diesel with a 275 gallon heating oil tank for fuel, and it is a very good generator.

Diesel is often preferred for powering sensitive equipment. The torque of the diesel means minimal frequency/voltage variation when loads change. Computer UPSs go nuts when the frequency changes much more than a single hertz.

For small power backup needs in long outages, a Tripplite APS with one or more deep cycle batteries is fairly affordable and zero maintenance.
