ah yes, the "feeling" of driving an SUV and being high up. a living room on wheels, a higher center of gravity, more insulation from the road and the rest of us, more blind spots. BTW, that "feeling" is the result of advertising telling you it was good and the reason that normal height vehicles were not as... what ever word they were pushing in that commercial. The manufacturers made more money on them so they advertised them. Standard Business procedure. When fuel costs went sky high the sedan sales, for the first time in many years, exceded the SUV/Truck/VAN sales for the first time in years.
Some actually do need them, have a large family, routinely haul lots of stuff, that kind of thing. Most don't need them but paying $70k for a decked out SUV has been elevated to buying that Porsche or name your favorite sports car. So blasting up and down the freeway, or around town, in a vehicle that is 1.5x to 2x the size really needed impacts all of us. Traffic slows in town because you can't see around/over/thru them, fewer cars get through the intersection/light, these are proven in studies over and over. And, sure the guy with the deep pockets *can* afford to purchase the extra fuel necessary to support the actual mileage achieved, however that means that more fuel is used by them, which means (supply/demand) the cost goes up across the board so it impacts *all* of us because the price goes up as the supply is less.
