Making biodiesel does not inherently require cultivating land - at least not the land that would otherwise be growing food. Biodiesel can be produced from a wide variety of waste products, and there are several technologies being developed to produce it from algae or bacteria. I'm not saying it's the future, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it. There is a lot less development in biodiesel than traditional gasoline - give it some time.
OTOH, hybrids pose enormous ecological risks and have a number of functional limitations. If I had to bank on either one of them, at this point I'd really rather have vast areas of the midwest dedicated to plant production than vast areas of the midwest designated for lithium ion battery waste.
