There's nothing more expensive than an older luxury car... except a new one?
Let's see, my "older luxury car" ('93 9000 Aero... if that's not a luxury car, I don't know what is) has the following cost of ownership record.
Purchase price (11/03): $7,000
Maintenance costs (not including gas or my new tires): $4,000
Total cost in 63 months: $11,000
Per month ownership costs (63 months): $175
Let's say I need a new transmission tomorrow: $2,000
Per month ownership costs: $206
What about an engine... the next day: $3,000?
Total cost: $15,000
Monthly cost: $238
Let's say it disappears in a fire storm and I buy it again, for $5000.
Total cost: $20,000
Per month cost: $318
At the end of the day, I'll take the used car. I haven't even factored in the reduced cost of registration and insurance.
My BMWs cost even less on a per-month basis... and I sold those and got about 80% of my initial expense out of them... They were older than my Saab.
If you're talking about even older, more luxurious cars, then you're right that they can be expensive, but people don't drive those to save money... it's a passion thing then.
With all the money I saved, I bought my '94 R1100RS, and boy am I glad of it.
