I think Pontiac could have been a full sized line if it had been managed correctly. Last I heard, Pontiac was supposed to be the 'performance' division of GM. The G8 is an excellent example of I think many people consider a Pontiac. But look at the other cars in the line up. Not a single one has higher 'performance' that its Chevy/Buick/GMC/Saturn/etc clone.
And then they introduce the G3. Unbelievable; that thing is a Chevy at best. Why wasn't the Chevy Cobalt SS a Pontiac. The Trailblazer SS should have also been a Pontiac, and the Saturn Sky Redline should not be equal to the Pontiac version.
I personally don't feel that GM's problems are too many brands (although it's a factor), it's too many brands that are completely undefined and poorly managed. Overall, they have a pretty decent products but those products are often placed in the wrong brand. For example, the Cadillac SRX should have been a Saab (something like a 9-5x), while the 9-7x would have been better suited as a mini Escalade. And why was the Vibe a Pontiac? I though Saturn was to be the Japanese alternative brand. It goes on and on.
Lot's of potential that is completely wasted.
