I bought a '01 540it last Friday in Connecticut. I have been looking for one for some time. Drove 100 miles from New Jersey. I wanted to get the car right away I paid on the spot and got all paper work back to New Jersey so I may get the plates to go back to CT to get the car.
Apparently the regulations on title assignment between the two States are different. The New Jersey DMV refused my used car registrtion saying I am missing a piece of document.
I got from the used car dealer the title from the original and first owner. It wasn't signed by him when he sold it to a car dealer. But the dealer filled out the buyer portion of the title. The dealer then sold it to the dealer where I bought the car from. Along with the original title I also got several other documents such as the title assignment and bill of sale, etc. But they weren't satisfactory to NJ DMV.
At the NJ DMV I had the agency director talk to the dealer so she (the clerk at the dealership) knows what is missing. She was going to get a power of attorney letter from the first dealership to send to me so I may complete the registration to go get the car. That was last Friday.
So my hope of getting the car over the weekend was dashed.
This morning I called the lady at the dealership. She asked me to send all paperwork back to her so she can get the original owner to sign the title and then mail back to me so I get my NJ plates.
I paid the dealer a bank check in full. The car and the keys are still in the dealer's possession. Now I am sending all paperwork back to him. What should I do to prevent the dealership from getting my money (which they already have) and not give me the car (which they can if they are not honest)?
