good news!
An independent Saab is the best possible scenario. I think Volvo will end up in the same boat, and I think it is a good thing. Some have argued that modern automotive development is too expensive for a small niche player, but I disagree. Look at the turnaround at Porsche. Imho, the solution to a lot of the problems of being small (relative to VW/Honda/GM etc) is collaboration, and Saab + Volvo have so much in common that they should collaborate to some degree (and with other Swedish institutions). Not by making the same cars, but in research + testing. It's happened in the past on safety, and recently on environmental design with bio-fuels and the Recharge. To me, that Recharge is what's going to be the game changer...
Remember, Saab cars were spawned to fill a business hole after WW2. There are some clever business minds in Sweden, and I hope they can steer Saab through this next phase! certainly they can do no worse than GM!
