I felt nothing at all. It was very light contact, but enough to damage the socket. I can't see but I assume the contact point on the car is also slightly damaged.
From online research it looks one can damage the battery from a lengthy short, but this was a tiny spark for a second and the battery and charging system still seem fine. I've learned my lesson. Anywhere near alternator, disconnect battery.
