I think it could be a perfect deal:
- SAAB will take advantage of FIAT dealers in Italy & Latin America, and sell immediately in italian market very very weel. FIAT Group has no D-E segment, and they are occupied by BMW-Mercedes-Audi. A lot of italian people who now are buying german cars on segnments D and E, could buy SAAB once they see the quality is there. SAAB as as much "north european appeal" as any german car, if not more (SAAB 9000 was a cult 20 years ago).
- FIAT will take advantage form SAAB dealers in US, and start to export Alfa and/or FIAT 500. ALfa Mito can do great things
- FIAT has a very good research centre (multiair last device presented to Geneva). Together with SAAB Research centre, the Group could be on the edge.
- FIAT and SAAB have both a "green identity". The would become the "greenest car group worldwide".
FIAT at this moment is doing much better than many other competitors. Sales numbers in March will be great. Brazil sales (key Market for FIAT) are also going very well. Besides, they're expanding in India and Russia, with key alliances. At this moment FIAT would have the financial strenght for such a deal.
As italian, I would be really excited of all that.
