Don't forget that GM is not made of one monolithic mind. Having worked at Saturn marketing there, I can tell you that GM is full of people in marketing and design who "get it." It's just that they can't justify investment in important aspects of a car when there is no business case that can be created for them. It was frequently the bean-counters that put the kabosh on lots of options. So, you can't blame everybody involved with Saab at GM for not wanting to do the right thing. The whole spiral started with lack of investment in the brand which led to reduced sales and more incentives which led to lower profits that the financial people probably used to rationalize further reductions in investment.
