Here's a semi-serious video editing rig that has worked well for me the last year or so.
Processor: Intel Quad Core QC6600. Look at the benchmarks, not all quads are created alike. If money is not an issue, an i7 could work even better.
Hard drives. I use a pair of Western Digital Velociraptor 10k RPM drives.
Lots of memory (4gb)
Windows XP
Use a jog/shuttle controller
Pinnacle 12 Uber edition
Big case with lots of fans as rendering will hit WOT thermal (wide open throttle) pretty quickly. My QC will run at 52C for hours at full load (all cores) while rendering.
I have no experience with Mac based systems so I can't pass judgement. Pinnacle is pretty good (I've used it for years) but hardware wise any kind of HD rendering will take ages. Rendering 1 hour miniDV's takes a good amount of time.
The big CPU and Velociraptors are the keys here. One raptor for reading and one for temp files (put both on one raptor and it slows down). Pinnacle does work OK with multicore architectures.
Next year's video editing rig - an 8-core double quad Xeon system :-)
