S-video was state-of-the-art 20+ years ago for connecting VCRs to CRT TVs. It was never good enough for displaying a computer image, which is why it was never used for that purpose.
What you want to do is use a (S)VGA cable, and set the computer's display resolution to the native resolution of the TV. That way you're making the most of the TVs capability.
