I was a dedicated user of AVG up until V8. V8 is a pig, slowing some systems to a crawl. Avast is fast and furious.
To the OP: Zone Alarm's main product is a firewall. It protects against inbound and outbound (unauthorized) access. Your Router (if you have broadband of some sort) will protect you against most inbound access. However, good and bad programs will still be free to go out to the Internet at will. ZA will help you control which ones do (if only to stop MS programs from constantly phoning home). If you have a laptop and hook up to public networks (eg Starbucks), not having a software firewall installed is a bad thing. ZA firewall is free and I have not seen any problems with it slowing down systems (although there are some issue with certain VIsta installations and MSIE).
ZA also offers an A/V program with their paid version. If you had that, get rid of it. Avast will do the same thing for free.
Spybot might find something once in a while I would not run it resident, just scan once in a while. You can also run Malwarebytes for free and keep an eye out for malware.
