All Herb's points are good ones, so go into this with your eyes wide open.
But people do this all the time with vacation homes. You can hire someone to check on the place on a routine basis, make sure the lawn is mowed, watered, etc. A lawn service will do this, clean up in the fall and spring, etc. We have property in Maine and there are guys there who check houses all year round when the owners aren't there. Absentee ownership has its costs, and you have to manage the details.
Even with someone keeping an eye on the joint, potential water leaks are something to pay attention to. We're on well water, which may make it a bit different, but we have one outside, frost-free faucet connected on the water pump side of the plumbing. When we go away we shut the rest of the house off, but someone can still come by and water plants, lawn, etc.
I wouldn't worry about turning on the AC in summer, but you obviously have to heat the place in winter, unless you drain all the water lines. Even then, keeping it at 50 degrees all winter is probably better for the house than having it go real cold.
Just my random thoughts.
