We had to upgrade last summer, and my advice is simple: don't scrimp. Buy the newest system and replace everything; you'll get better efficiency and save in the long run. Buy the most energy efficient equipment you can afford; it will save you money in the long run (my new American Standard costs 30% less to run that the 10-year-old Lenox it replaced). If you go ahead and replace the furnace at the same time, you can get an even more efficient AC (I didn't do this but wish I had) saving money in the long run. Get quotes from several dealers and go with the one you trust, even if it costs a bit more in the short run (I went with the American Standard largely because that's what the dealer who knew what he was doing recommended). Do some homework on your own and figure out what size equipment you need and don't just replace ton-for-ton as many appear to be the wrong size; an AC that's too large cools unevenly and doesn't dehumidify as well as a smaller one while an AC that's too small runs too often, making it inefficient and expensive to use (again, a good dealer will tell you what you need not just tell you what a replacement unit costs).
Good luck
