It really depends on how many miles you drive per year, because a lot of the costs like insurance, loan payments, and property tax are fixed, whether you drive 200 miles a week or 500. For me personally, driving about 14K/year, I figured out roughly how long I plan to keep the car (a long time), how much I paid for it new (no loan payment interest), what it will be worth when I sell it (not much), repairs (depreciation goes down with age, repairs go up), tires, maintenance, property tax, (all based on two previous Saabs), etc. etc. The number I came up with is about 56 cents/mile, based on the current gas price of about $3/gallon.
If someone only drives 7K/year, the cost per mile will be higher because the fixed costs are about the same per year, and the car will probably not last twice as many years... I did a similar calculation on a Honda Civic that we bought new two years ago that is driven about 7K/year with insurance on a driver under 25 (expensive!), the cost/mile is a lot higher than my Saab even though the car cost half as much to buy.
There are a lot of variables, but depending on how badly you want to retire early, I'm sure you can make the numbers work in your favor ;-)
