We were going to go to San Francisco from north LA County for the 4th of July but decided instead to go to Sequoia NP and Kings Canyon NP.
Sequoia was mobbed so we spent most of our time at Hume Lake in Sequoia NF for swimming and Kings Canyon for day hikes. Haven't been there since 1982 (for some unknown reason after seeing it again yesterday!). Spectacular, yet a relatively uncrowded and unvisited park. Highly recommended but stay away from the river unless you have a death wish. One bonus of going to Kings Canyon on CA Rt 180 from Fresno is that you also get to visit the Grant Grove of sequoias on the way there. Seems like that's a lot less crowded than the souther end of Sequoia NP near the General Sherman Tree, Crystal Cave, etc.
Our '06 9-3 SC performed flawlessly. Great car for two adults and two small kids. The only thing better to have would've been a convertible.
For future reference, avoid California Rt 245 south from CA Rt 180 unless you like car sick kids / wife. Scenic but super twisty and slow. A much better road for a solo driver or someone on a motorcycle.
