I wouldn't necessarily associate the reverse problem with a bad transmission either. This is very common and my remedy (if its the same problem mine has) is to place the shifter into 1st then reverse. If this doesn't work, place it into the reverse position and if it does not engage, let the car roll just slightly and it may slip into position. If no incline or it won't engage, set the parking brake and very slowly start releasing the clutch while trying to place it into reverse.

Not sure where you are in Oregon but just south of Portland I was getting parts from a shop call Saab and Volvo by Mat in Terwilliger area. He dismantles and rebuilds and has lots of misc parts.
