Falling apart at 120K could be said for a lot of cars. And any car will wear out, anyway. It's a machine. On a Saab, a DI is normal to replace at some point. So are things like a heater core, shocks, struts, etc.
If you want a Saab that will hold up a long time, you have to actively and proactively maintain it. Do more than the scheduled maintenance, like shorter fluid change intervals, and do it all religiously. Know the interactions, like doing plugs more often (using dielectric grease) is easier on your DI. And if you drive it hard or track it, you have to up the maintenance level.
I just bought a '99 9-3 SE with 147K on it from my neighbor. It runs perfectly and I have all the service records. It's due for a couple of things, but was maintained at least on the factory schedule, and anything wrong was dealt with immediately.
Maintenance pays off, but ya gotta be compulsive about it. These are Toyotas or Chevys where you can ignore them.
