tearing up bogus parking ticket

i drove up from SC to a tiny town in southwestern VA today to do the virginia creeper bike trail with my wife. there is one main street through town with about 5 narrow cross streets. we parked the saab off the main street on one of the cross streets next to a little bank. we were advised to park there by the local outdoor shop, so we knew it was safe there for the day.
when we got back in the late afternoon, there was a ticket on the windshield as well as on the car in front of us (they were also doing the trail). the reason for the $25 ticket was that our cars were facing the wrong direction on the street. now to explain the situation, there were absolutely no signs or markings on the pavement, buildings or ANYTHING to indicate how or where to park. we didn't even know the street was a two way because we pulled in behind the car that was in front of us already parked on the left side of the street, facing toward main st.
ANYWAY, all that to say, we walked up to the police station to explain our side of it, and they told us the $25 was already doing us a favor because they could have either towed us or written it for $75. (i know, just help the little town out and pay the damn ticket, right?) well, as we were leaving town, we saw at least 2 cars with bikes on top pulled over for various violations. we thought it kinda sucked that they were sort of preying on outsiders' ignorance or whatever to generate revenue for the annual city council pot luck dinner.
so rather than argue with the police chief / judge/ jury, i was thinking about just ignoring it and not pay at all. i can hardly imaging they would try to recoup the fine from 2 states away! am i looking for trouble here? i mean, what are the legal ramifications of walking away from a bogus parking ticket? they got my tag info, but no DL# or any other info. it's very possible i will never return to this place, so what's the point?
thanks,
scott
