For cross border, I agree. The USPS folks know the rates (if any) and do that part correctly. I will note that packages to/from Canada often get delayed one to three weeks for reasons unknown. But, the arrive.

For deomestic shipping, small packages & light weight, the USPS priority service is great.

But, as size goes up, you end up in Parcel Post which is slow and expensive. You are better off with a commercial carrier.

Be aware that over a certain size, UPS bumps everything to the 70 lb rate. So, for example, shipping a CRT computer monitor that weighs 25 lbs in a manufacturer's box - 70 lb rate. Shipping a bicycle frame that weigh 11 lbs packed but needs a 4' long box - 70 lb rate. Fedex doesn't do any "large package" charges until the package gets quite a bit bigger. SO, for large or heavy, use Fedex. Fedex rates for ground are generally lower than UPS.

As to package damage - I used to ship a lot of stuff for business. I NEVER got a package from UPS that was not damaged. The heavier the package, the more damaged it was. Why? Because UPS's distribution centers are like medieval torture chambers with a huge, cyclops like supervisor weilding a whip forcing his slaves to work harder and faster. They routinely throw packages 30 feet across a warehouse to get them to a truck. No wonder they never arrrive intact.

With Fedex, OTOH, I have only rarely recieved a damaged package. They most always arrive looking like they just got on the truck. They also arrive in 3 days most of the time, where UPS always seems to take a week no matter where the package is coming from (unless it's an adjacent state).

YMMV
