Footprints are basically a water resitant ground cloth for under the tent, it is cut and sewn to go match up exactly with the floor of a particular tent model, and often clips into the exisitng tent. They are a common accesory for higher end backpacking tents to improve the water proofness and durability of the floor, at the expense of some extra weight to carry.
For a lower end basic car camping tent, if you want an extra barier under the tent, I would recomend you get a sheet of heavy plastic tarp-like material and cut it to the same shape as the under side of your tent, or buy a platic tarp and fold the edges over so that it matches up with the perimiter of your tent. Don't let the tarp stick out past the tent body or it will collect rain water and send it under the tent.
