The real deal (we have one) is cast iron with solid plates on top. Used to be solid fuel (anthracite) but these days you can fuel them with oil, LPG or cheap-rate electricity.
They are expensive both to buy and to run but that's not really the point, especially if you live in an old house - mine is a converted water-mill dating to about 1690 and has 2' thick walls built by piling up stones until they got high enough, with no damp course, and the Aga seems to gently warm it through.
But mainly it's a different way of cooking, you tend to bring things up to heat on the top then use one of the ovens to complete the cooking. Also fabulous for stews, roasts and reheating just about anything, but you have to remember what you've put in ans you generally can't smell the food cooking in the ovens like you will in a conventional cooker.
Also useful for drying off dogs, reviving lambs, just leaning against while holding a drink, and saving you from having to iron sheets/towels (put them on top of the closed lids and go and do something more fun).
