OT - Friend's Corolla won't start when humid/rain. Posted by Wil W [Email] (#1148) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Wil W) on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 18:06:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi All,
Thought I'd get some advice from some experienced car people albeit its not for a Saab. Went camping with a friend and after a night of rain, his Corolla wouldn't start. Car was parked overnight and it rained all night but slowly cleared up some in the late morning. It would crank but would not turn over. It started right up after it had cleared up and the humidity had dropped.
I did see some sparks at the distributor cap when he tied starting it. I did a quick pull/reconnect of the plug wires at the plugs, pulled the distributor for moisture, and scraped the points and rotor but to no avail. I thought there was a short in the ignition system due to the moisture.
I'm sure there is stuff I'm missing, but that was all I could think of to do with my pocket tool at the campgrounds.
He said that this has happened several times before when it rained or was very humid. It always started when it cleared out and dried out, car runs fine and quiet otherwise. I'm thinking of helping him replace plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor (~$100 in parts). Do you have any additional thoughts? Do you think replacement of these items would help with his starting problems?
TIA
