I doesn't help that the rules for using traffic circles/rotarys, whatever you call them can vary state to state, and even within states.
When I was stationed in Massachusetts, I got plenty of practice with how Massachusetts does them. Traffic ON the rotary has right of way, traffic entering or leaving must yield. I think that's the usual way in Sweden, from what I recall, and seems to be the more logical method.
Then I come home to NJ, and the rules CHANGE! Not just from state to state, but circle to circle, and sometimes there were different rules depending on WHERE on the circle you were on! No wonder NJ bulldozed most of them and put in cloverleaf intersections or lights.
Fortunately, NJ is moving most of the remaining circles towards the former. But it can be a circus out there!
Oh - a couple other things - as I recall from my driving in Sweden & Denmark, their traffic circles are always a CIRCLE! Not egg shaped, oval, trioval, etc. THey may have more or less than 4 ways on or off, but it's nealry always a circle.
AND, when you approach them, the road signs show you graphically the layout of the circle. NJ needs those people!
