Finland is a wonderful place to visit because of the people but it's not the most picturesque or interesting (IMHO) unless you're making the trip to the far north either in the dead of winter or at midsummer, or to the coastal islands in midsummer.
Helsinki has plenty of places to keep you busy for a few days (Suomenlinna, etc.) but if I had a spare day there I'd do a day trip by fast ferry across the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn, Estonia. If going to another country is too much, maybe hit Turku or Savonlinna. Take the train for both -- 2 hrs to Turku; 4.5 hrs to Savonlinna (so a daytrip there may be tough).
