selling cars can be a pretty miserable job--you work evenings and weekends and most dealerships treat you pretty badly. At the right dealership it can be fun, interesting and even pay pretty well but those dealerships are getting pretty rare. And because the car business is so volitle (even in the best of times) you might start out working at a good place, build up a customer base and then an ownership chance can put you in a real snake pit.
Building up your product knowledge (and that of your competitors) is a good thing but doesn't garentee success. Oddly some of the best salepeople really aren't that knowledgeable--I sometimes think it just boils down to how hard you're willing to push without being too obvious. Being nice and polite might seem like a virtue and will make you friends, but the people who push hard get the extra deals it takes to be a top salesperson.
My son is also in the car business and has one of the sweetest jobs I I've even seen (he sells late model European cars and works for a real great guy) so it can happen, but it's rare. If I had it to do all over again I'd get an advance degree in something there's big demand for. The car business is a very tough gig. While I don't want to discourage you you should go into it knowing the truth. While it could work out for you, just don't beat your head against a brick wall for too long.
