Airline power adapters for laptops

Does anyone know if the cigarette lighter type plugs for use in airliners are the same diameter as the ones in cars?
She's flying to Japan on American Airlines and I have a Kensington power adapter with the airline style Em Power plug and a cigarette lighter plug (which American uses) but I'm told the cigarette lighter plug is a different size for planes and cars. 20mm in planes, I'm told.
Do need to get her something different? She's leaving soon, so I need to act fast.
TIA.
