Yeah, I think there is a bit of a mob mentality at work, but there are a few "big picture" facts worth keeping in mind:
1. I'm sure he earned enough over his entire career at GM that money
is not a worry for him, so he was able to take do all the PR stunts like take $1 salaries, etc. He may feel a slight twinge of envy that he isn't uber-rich, but by any sane comparison, he'll be fine (financially speaking). I'm sure in one good year as a C-level exec (don't forget he was CFO and COO before he was CEO) he made more than an average American will earn in a lifetime.
2. Sure I'll believe he was a nice guy. I'm not sure I have any reason to care about that, or any other personal matter of his, but it's nice to hear.
3. IMO the only thing we should be concerned about was his very public role as CEO of a giant important domestic corporation, a job in which his performance absolutely sucked! It's plain to see that he could not or would not do what GM needed to be successful - and he got exactly what he deserved (a pink slip).
No hard feelings. He doesn't deserve to be harassed or vilified. He tried, was well compensated, and eventually had to go. I certainly wish the man the best of luck. Adios, Rick...
